Temporary workers will be allowed to stay longer as their applications for a provincial immigration program are processed, according to the Manitoba government.

Up to 6,700 people will be able to continue working while waiting for nomination through Manitoba’s provincial nominee program. Such acceptance will likely come within two years, Labour and Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino said in a news release.

The provincial government is adding five temporary full-time positions to process the applications, Marcelino announced.

Focus will be put on expediting applications for people whose status in Canada is expiring. The change will ensure all 9,500 nominee spots are used this year, according to a government release.

The NDP signed a letter of intent with Ottawa in August, allowing for eligible candidates to apply for work permit extensions.
