Two teenagers have been charged in a random assault on a stranger with bear spray and robbery at the University of Manitoba.

The Winnipeg Police Service responded to a robbery report in the first 100 block of Chancellors Circle around 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Two male suspects had approached an 18-year-old man, who was sitting on a park bench, and attacked him with bear spray before stealing his personal property and fleeing the campus, police said in a news release Thursday.

The release states the victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries on the scene.

Officers later located the suspects at a residence in the 600 block of Pasadena Avenue and arrested them without incident.

A 19-year-old man and 16-year-old boy have each been charged with single counts of robbery and mischief under $5,000.

The assault was unprovoked and the suspects and victim were not previously known to one another, police said.
