Two Manitoba businesses are world class, according to Square, a technology company that offers point of sale solutions.

Middlebro butter company Von Slick’s Finishing Touch and Winnipeg charcuterie café and catering service Sharecuterie were honoured as part of Square’s second-annual Square 50, an awards program the company says champions “businesses that are changing the entrepreneurial game.”

Only nine Canadian companies made the list, which was announced Oct. 16.

Von Slick’s was recognized in the innovation category; Sharecuterie was honoured in the sustainability category.

The recognition is thrilling for Sharecuterie owner Cassandra Carreiro, who started her business in 2020, and opened a storefront on Stafford Street last year.

“It definitely feels a bit surreal just being a new entrepreneur and all of this happening organically,” Carreiro said. “It’s exciting.”

For Von Slick’s, the recognition comes on the heels of a recent trip to Wisconsin, where the company won gold at the World Dairy Expo.

“To be recognized along with all the other Square 50 winners is awesome,” said Von Slick’s co-founder Landon Kroeker.

Lindsey Irvine, head of marketing at Square, said in a news release the company is delighted to shine a light on businesses that display resilience, innovation, drive and leadership. “Every business is a winner to us and Square 50 aims to give sellers the recognition they deserve.”

Founded in 2009, Square offers more than 35 products that help businesses sell their wares and manage their inventory from anywhere. Last year, US$209.6 billion in payments were processed using Square.
