The Manitoba government is launching a new immigration initiative amid concerns of rural labour shortages.

A three-year pilot will target west central Manitoba employers in seven rural municipalities and Gambler First Nation, Labour and Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino announced Nov. 15.

Up to 300 people may be required within the next three years to meet labour needs, a government announcement reads. New jobs and retirements were highlighted.

Eighty-five employers in the west central region were surveyed. The pilot program will follow three active immigration initiatives in Winkler-Stanley, Morden and the Parkland region.

The rural municipalities of Russell-Binscarth, Yellowhead, Roblin, Ellice-Archie, Riding Mountain West, Rossburn and Prairie View are part of the new program.
