The number of countries and other issuing jurisdictions whose drivers are eligible to exchange a valid driver’s licence for a Manitoba one will more than double Monday.

Manitoba Public Insurance said Thursday that 26 countries in Europe or surrounding islands are being added to the current 15 jurisdictions on the reciprocal list for exchanging licences. People with licences from the 41 jurisdictions can exchange them for a Manitoba class 5F driver’s or 6F motorcycle licence, without local knowledge or road testing.

The newly added countries are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

MPI spokesman Tara Seel said licences that are suspended or have monies owed on them are ineligible for exchange. Commercial class licences from the 41 jurisdictions are also ineligible. Seel said adding eligible countries will likely help reduce the wait time for new drivers to take a road test, but that’s not the reason the 26 were added

“It is really more that these are safe drivers on the road,” Seel said.

“We wanted to make the process simpler for these drivers who are safe on the road. If they are in good standing, they don’t need to go through the whole graduated licensing program we have here.”

Manitoba is the first province to follow Saskatchewan’s lead after it extended passenger and motorcycle licence equivalency to the 26 countries in 2023.

All newcomers and visitors can drive using their foreign licence for up to three months before they require a Manitoba licence.

The current reciprocal jurisdictions are: Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Japan, Northern Ireland, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canadian Forces Europe.
