An 18-year-old woman is dead after an SUV went off a northern Manitoba highway and rolled Tuesday.

RCMP said the woman, who was a passenger in the southbound vehicle, and the 43-year-old male driver were not wearing seatbelts when the crash happened on Provincial Road 280, about a 30-minute drive south of Split Lake.

Both are from the remote community, police said.

The rollover was reported at about 7 a.m. Firefighters from Split Lake and First Nation safety officers were providing first aid to the woman and man, who were outside the vehicle, when RCMP officers arrived.

The woman died at the scene. The driver, who suffered serious injuries, remains in hospital, RCMP said Thursday.
