Manitoba motorists whose licences were set to expire between mid-November and the end of January will see their renewal deadlines extended in the wake of the Canada Post strike, the provincial public insurer said Friday.

Manitoba Public Insurance does not expect customers to receive their annual driver’s licence, vehicle registration and insurance statements to arrive until the mail service stabilizes, it said in a statement.

People with licence, registration and insurance expiration dates between Nov. 15 and Feb. 1 will see those deadlines extended to Feb. 28, MPI said.

The extension will protect customers from unknowingly driving with expired licence or insurance, but MPI is encouraging motorists to stay ahead of their renewal dates and make payments on time, the Crown corporation said.

Those payments are due four months after the licence holder’s birth date.

Canadian postal workers returned to work Dec. 17, leaving the picket lines after a month-long strike. The job action, coupled with an influx of parcels during the holiday season, created a large backlog, the postal service said.

Canada Post said previously that people could expect delivery delays into 2025.
