A man is dead and another is in hospital in critical condition after carbon monoxide filled their car while it was stuck in a snowbank.
On Friday afternoon around 2 p.m., paramedics were called to a vehicle stuck in a snowbank in the 600 block of Nassau Street South. A 84-year-old man, a 67-year-old man and a dog were found unconscious inside due to exhaust fumes in the car.
Police were called minutes later and found the dog was dead. Both men were sent to hospital in critical condition and the 84-year-old has since died. The 67-year-old remains in critical condition. Investigators believe the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning caused by the car’s exhaust pipe being blocked with snow.
In a news release Friday, the Winnipeg Police Service said to ensure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow when running a vehicle and to avoid sitting in an idling vehicle for long periods of time without ventilation.
