This year’s Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad kicked off Thursday, as volunteers donated the record $650,000 raised in the 2024 campaign to local cancer researchers.
The local charitable campaign’s 17th ride will be held May 31. The ride for dad will see motorcyclists — who collect monetary pledges — ride their bikes from Polo Park to Assiniboia Downs before heading to Selkirk, Gimli and then back to Winnipeg. Others can donate directly to the campaign or support a rider with cash.
Moe Sabourin, co-chair of the campaign and a retired Winnipeg police officer, said the main message of this year’s campaign is the importance of early detection of prostate cancer. He and others on the campaign implored men 45 and older to get annual blood tests to catch the disease before it progresses.
Campaign officials donated 2024’s record amount to prostate cancer researchers at the University of Manitoba. Sabourin noted the Manitoba campaign has raised and donated more than $5 million over the years.
The first ride for dad prostate cancer education and awareness campaign was held in Ottawa in 2000, and campaigns have since been set up in cities across the country. More than $43 million has been raised for prostate cancer research in the years since.
