A couple is facing charges after about $60,000 was misappropriated from a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Winnipeg.
The Winnipeg Police Service’s financial crime unit launched an investigation in December 2024 after being told about suspicious use of funds.
Investigators determined two seniors diverted funds to their own joint account between May 2020 and April 2023. They were in unpaid positions at the Weston-area branch, were authorized to access the legion’s bank account and had signing authority, the WPS said in a news release Thursday.
“The funds were also used to pay the male suspect an honorarium, to which he was not entitled,” the WPS said.
Officers arrested the couple Wednesday after receiving authorization from Crown attorneys.
A 70-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman, both of Winnipeg Beach, face charges of theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000.
They were released on appearance notices.
