Taxi stop leads to gun charges

A 25-year-old Cross Lake man faces firearms charges after he allegedly tried to get away from police when officers pulled over a taxi on Saturday evening.
North District Community Support Unit officers were patrolling at about 6:35 p.m. May 10 when they saw a taxi contravene traffic laws and pulled over the taxi in the 100 block of McKenzie Street, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday.
One of the three occupants of the vehicle got out and began walking away, but was quickly apprehended and searched by police. Officers found a loaded Glock 17 handgun with an extended magazine and about 17 rounds of ammunition. The man was placed under arrest and the gun was seized by police. He remains in custody awaiting disposition, the news release stated. The man’s name hasn’t been publicly released. He faces charges that include possession of a loaded, prohibited or restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order.
