WINNIPEG – Winnipeg’s police chief says officers shot a man with a screwdriver when they responded to a report of someone in an alley who was bleeding and may have been breaking into houses late Friday afternoon.

Gene Bowers says the officers then provided first aid, including a chest seal, and the man was taken to hospital in critical condition.

He didn’t survive, and Bowers say Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit has now taken over the case.

Bowers said he didn’t know the age of the man or where he was from, noting the IIU is in the process of identifying the man and notifying his family.

He alleged the man was acting erratically before one, or both, of the  officers at the scene fired at him.

Bowers said more details will be determined by the IIU investigation, and the officers will be out of the workplace in keeping with the department’s critical incident protocols.

“I personally met with the officers last night to ensure they were OK,” Bowers told a news conference on Saturday.

“No officer comes to work wanting to be involved in an incident like this.”

The IIU issued a news release saying it is seeking witnesses or people with video footage that could help the investigation.
