Police investigate after man found injured on Main Street
10:50 AM
Winnipeg police are investigating after a man was found injured on Main Street just south of Higgins Avenue early Tuesday.
Police spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon said the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the scene just before 4 a.m., where responders found the man in unstable condition and took him to hospital.
The call initially came in as a possible collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle, said McKinnon, but police have not yet confirmed whether that is how the man came to be injured.
WFPS called for police, who responded to the scene just before 4:30 a.m. Major crimes detectives are taking over the investigation and have taped off a scene in the area. Forensics officers are examining the scene.
McKinnon said police are still working on confirming the man’s identity, including his age.

Insurer parks unit outside evacuation centre
10:01 AM
Wawanesa Insurance has set up its mobile response unit outside Billy Mosienko Arena in Winnipeg to help wildfire evacuees.
The unit is set up in the parking lot of the arena at 709 Keewatin St., which is being used as a reception centre for evacuees.
“Wawanesa team members working out of the vehicle are providing personalized support to members by helping them open claims, answering questions and distributing care kits,” a Tuesday news release said.
The unit is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will remain in place as long as needed, the insurance company said.
The unit features Wi-Fi and a soundproof meeting room for confidential conversations. It was last used in Manitoba for wildfire evacuees from the Lac du Bonnet area.
Wawanesa said it had claims representatives at Billy Mosienko Arena shortly after the centre opened, before the unit’s vehicle arrived.
Kupari departing Jets for Swiss team
9:24 AM
Rasmus Kupari is taking a time out from living his NHL dream.
The Winnipeg Jets centre and pending restricted free agent has signed a two-year deal to play for Lugano HC in the Swiss League, the team announced on its website on Tuesday.
Kupari, who was part of the trade with the Los Angeles Kings that also brought fellow forwards Gabe Vilardi and Alex Iafallo and a second-round pick to the Jets, is expected to receive a qualifying offer — which would allow Winnipeg to maintain his NHL rights.
The 25-year-old took some important strides this season, filling in admirably when captain Adam Lowry was out for eight games with an injury while finishing the campaign with five goals and eight points in 53 NHL games.
A first-round choice (20th overall) by the Kings in the 2018 NHL Draft, Kupari has suffered injuries (concussion and shoulder) that have derailed each of the past two seasons, which is likely a factor in his decision to head overseas.
