Manitoba’s police watchdog says a woman who became unresponsive after being arrested in January died of complications related to a cocaine overdose.

RCMP were sent to a home in Vogar on the night of Jan. 15 after someone called 911 and hung up. Officers arrested a woman after determining she was under the influence of drugs and had tried to use a knife on another female in the home.

The woman became unresponsive while police were driving her to Ashern’s hospital. Officers pulled over and gave the woman emergency care. She died in a Winnipeg hospital the next day.

“After a complete review of the evidence available in this heartbreaking incident … the civilian director is declining to lay charges in this matter,” the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said in a report released Tuesday.
