MIRAMICHI – New Brunswick’s police oversight agency is investigating the death of a man inside a jail cell at the municipal police station in Miramichi.

The Serious Incident Response Team says preliminary information suggests that on Sunday night, Miramichi police officers arrested the man for an alleged theft and mischief at a local restaurant.

The independent watchdog says the man was placed in a cell overnight and officers found him unresponsive the next morning.

Emergency medical staff declared him dead at the scene.

The team has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
