Bombers lose nail-biter to Riders in Labour Day Classic
9:23 PM
REGINA – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers fell 34-30 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a thrilling Labour Day Classic at Mosaic Stadium.
In the game’s final minute, Winnipeg’s comeback bid was stopped just short. After scoring a late touchdown, the Bombers needed a two-point convert to tie the game, but Zach Collaros’s pass was intercepted by Riders defensive back Tevaughn Campbell and returned for a two-point score.
The Riders secured the win on a final failed onside kick by the Bombers.
The Bombers, who dropped to 6-5, got touchdowns from Brady Oliveira, Nic Demski.and Keric Wheatfall. For the 9-2 Riders, Mario Anderson had two rushing touchdowns, while A.J. Ouellette added another, and Tommy Nield scored on a 69-yard catch.
The two teams will face off again next week in Winnipeg for the annual Banjo Bowl.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services responded to a fire in a vacant, two-and-a-half storey house in the 400 block of Aberdeen Avenue, shortly before noon Sunday.
When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the building and launched an interior fire attack, getting the fire under control at 12:23 p.m.
Firefighters searched the residence and found no occupants. There were no injuries reported.
The building was previously damaged by fires in February and July.
There is no estimate of the damage and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Man struck, killed while wandering through highway traffic
3:35 PM
A 27-year-old man is dead after police said he was hit by a car while walking in traffic on a rural Manitoba highway on Saturday morning.
Mounties from the Steinbach detachment received reports of the man walking in traffic on Provincial Road 311, in the RM of Ste. Anne at 6:15 a.m., Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Sunday.
Police were responding to the call when they received an update saying the man had been struck by a vehicle. The man, from the RM of Hanover, was pronounced dead on scene, RCMP said.
The driver of the vehicle, a 61-year-old male from Steinbach, remained at the scene, police said.
No other injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.
City police seize airsoft gun, drugs during proactive patrol
3:34 PM
City police patrolling Winnipeg’s inner city seized an air pistol and drugs late Saturday night, resulting in charges for a man and woman.
Officers conducting proactive patrols spotted the pair standing near a vehicle in a commercial parking lot on the 200 block of McGregor Street shortly before midnight on Saturday, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Sunday.
“Businesses were closed due to the time of day in an area known for higher rates of both property and violent crime,” WPS said. “When officers approached the vehicle to speak with the pair, they observed a firearm in plain view inside the vehicle.”
Officers arrested the pair and searched the vehicle, discovering a Beretta-styled air pistol, and an assortment of drugs, including approximately 20 grams of cocain, 22 grams of methamphetamine and 73 Gabapentin prescription pills, WPS said.
Police also seized a cell phone, scale and $625 in cash.
A 66-year-old man faces multiple trafficking-related, weapons-related, and proceeds of crime charges. He was released on an undertaking.
A 44-year-old woman faces similar charges, including for failing to comply with a release order. She also faces a charge of mischief to property after police said she damaged a door during the intake process at the police station.
The woman was detained in police custody awaiting further disposition.
Police arrest ‘erratic, violent’ man believed to be experiencing psychosis
11:10 AM
A 54-year-old man is in custody, after police said he wandered through traffic on a major Winnipeg thoroughfare while armed with a knife Saturday morning.
Police responded to the 2300 block of Pembina Highway around 10:40 a.m. after a concerned citizen called for help. Officers arrived to find the man in the centre median, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Sunday.
“While yelling and screaming at officers, the man approached the police cruiser and began banging the windows using his fist and the weapon,” the release said.
“The officers, concerned for their own safety and that of the general public, voiced for additional units to assist in taking the agitated man into custody.”
The man continued displaying “erratic, violent behaviour” and police made several failed attempts to convince him to drop the weapon, police said.
Officers deployed multiple tasers before disarming him. The suspect was sedated, stabilized and taken to hospital for further assessment, police said.
Police believe the man was experiencing psychosis. Neither he nor the officers were injured during the incident, police said.
The man is facing charges for possession of a weapon and two counts of assault a peace officer with a weapon, WPS said. He remains in custody.
