Nurse charged with assault of patient
5:13 PM
A licensed practical nurse has been charged with assault at the hospital in Steinbach last year.
Tammy Freynet, 50 of the Rural Municipality of Hanover, was charged with assault with a weapon over an incident in September last year, reportedly involving a patient.
“We can confirm that the assault took place at the Bethesda (Regional Health Centre) in Steinbach,” said RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Melanie Roussel on Thursday.
“The person charged with assault was employed and working there when the assault occurred.”
The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba’s registry shows Freynet’s nursing licence has been inactive since December.
Her next court date is in Steinbach in November.
A spokesperson for Southern Health-Santé Sud, the health authority that oversees the Steinbach hospital, said it has policies in place to thoroughly investigate and report any incidents involving the care and well-being of patients to the relevant authorities.
The Manitoba Nurses Union, which represents licensed practical nurses, did not return a request for comment Thursday.
Measles warning issued for Carpathia School
3:09 PM
The province is notifying the public about a River Heights School where people might have been exposed to measles.
Public health officials asked anyone who was at Carpathia School between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. from Sept. 3 to Sept. 5, or on Monday, to check their immunization records and ensure they are up to date with measles vaccines.
There have been 198 measles cases in Manitoba since February. More information about measles, exposures and immunization is available here.
One hurt when minivan, school bus collide
2:36 PM
A teen driver was taken to hospital in unstable condition after a minivan collided with a school bus in the Fairfield Park area.
Police were contacted about the collision on Keslar Road just south of Langley Bay shortly after 3:25 p.m. Wednesday.
The crash happened outside Richmond Montessori School, at 85 Keslar Rd.
The school bus did not sustain significant damage, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Thursday. The 17-year-old driver of the minivan has since been upgraded to stable condition.
The grey minivan had been driven in the area of Lee Boulevard, south of Bison Drive between Pembina Highway and Waverley Boulevard, before the collision, the WPS said. Police asked anyone with information or video about how the minivan was being driven before the crash to contact investigators at 204-986-7085, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
More information about the crash “will be provided at a later date,” the release said.

Crews extinguished a fire in a commercial building on the 700 block of Main Street early Thursday.
Crews were sent to the scene shortly before midnight and declared the fire under control nearly half an hour later.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Power restored early in northern communities
12:35 PM
Manitoba Hydro says work to restore power to hundreds of northern customers amid wildfires this spring and summer will be finished earlier than expected.
Power was being restored to Lynn Lake and Marcel Colomb First Nation on Thursday, the Crown corporation said in a news release.
Mathias Colomb Cree Nation (Pukatawagan) and O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation (South Indian Lake) were back on the grid Wednesday. Repairs to one transmission line to improve reliability in Mathias Colomb will be done next week.
Power was restored in Leaf Rapids on Tuesday.
The work will be finished two to four weeks sooner than expected, the release said. Favourable weather, reduced wildfire activity, and well-planned logistics and camps housing crews, helped speed up the process, Hydro said.
“These communities have been under terrible strain due to this devastating wildfire season,” Jeff Betker — Hydro’s vice-president of external and Indigenous relations, environment and communications — said in a news release. “We’re pleased we’ve been able to restore power, much more quickly than initially thought, without compromising safety.”
More than 1,000 hydro poles, and other equipment, were damaged or destroyed amid Manitoba’s worst wildfire season in decades, often in remote areas and difficult terrain, Hydro said. The cost of the restoration effort is estimated to be $32 million.

SUPPLIED
Crews work on a transmission line that runs between Leaf Rapids and O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation on Aug. 24.
Man sought in Portage la Prairie assault
10:42 AM
RCMP are searching for a man who allegedly broke into a woman’s Portage la Prairie home and assaulted her.
Police were contacted at about 3:45 a.m. on Sept. 3. The victim said a man she knows broke in, assaulted her and fled. There were children there at the time, RCMP said in a news release Thursday.
The woman was taken to hospital.
A warrant for arrest has been issued for Burton (Cody) Campbell, 39, of Ebb and Flow First Nation. He is facing charges of breaking and entering with intent; assault while choking, suffocating or strangling; and four counts of failing to comply with a condition of a release order.
RCMP asked anyone who knows where Campbell is to contact the Portage detachment at 204-857-4445, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online.

Burton (Cody) Campbell, 39, of Ebb and Flow First Nation is wanted on six charges.
Flight stops in Winnipeg after medical incident
10:18 AM
A flight from South Korea to New York was diverted to Winnipeg on Wednesday morning because of a medical concern.
The plane landed at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport as a precaution because of concerns a person onboard might have been exposed to a highly contagious pathogen.
“Upon further examination, it was determined the patient did not pose a significant risk to others on the plane, and no quarantine was required,” a spokesperson for the province wrote Thursday.
The patient was taken to St. Boniface Hospital and placed in a special containment area before being moved. The patient was still being treated in Winnipeg on Thursday.
The Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul departed Winnipeg for John F. Kennedy International Airport later Wednesday morning. The plane was in Winnipeg for more than three hours.
Man charged after Long Plain First Nation gun incident
10:00 AM
A man has been charged after an incident involving a sawed-off shotgun in Long Plain First Nation.
The Manitoba First Nations Police Service was contacted shortly after 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 3. Officers went to a home and were told a man who went there with a male youth brandished a shotgun and pointed it at the front door. No shots were fired, but the suspects smashed the front window, the MFNPS said in a news release Thursday.
Police arrested a man after he fled from a home on Split Rock Trail. Officers later arrested another man, who was not involved in the first incident, after he fled from the home. That man had a sawed-off .22-calibre rifle and ammunition on him, police said.
Officers searched the home and found a loaded sawed-off shotgun.
Two men, ages 25 and 24, have been charged with weapons offences. Both were held in custody to appear in court at a later date.
The youth has not been found.
The MFNPS asked anyone with information about the incident to call the Long Plain First Nation detachment at 204-252-4488, or to contact the tips line anonymously at 1-833-978-0048 or TIPS@mfnp.ca.
