Jets fall in overtime to start preseason

6:53 PM

The Winnipeg Jets have started their six-game preseason schedule off with an overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild.

Yakov Trenin’s second goal of the game came with 61 seconds left in the three-on-three session at Canada Life Centre. Hunter Haight had tied the game for the visitors with just under three minutes left in regulation.

Morgan Barron and Danny Zhilkin scored for the Jets, with both goals coming in the first period.

Both teams dressed young, inexperienced rosters lacking in star power.

The Jets continue the exhibition slate on Tuesday when they host the Edmonton Oilers.

Seniors violently attacked, suspect in custody

1:36 PM

Two octogenarians were violently attacked while they were walking along Elgin Avenue on Saturday evening.

A 28-year-old man has been charged in connection with the attack, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday.

It happened just after 6:30 p.m. Sept. 20. An 80-year-old woman and an 85-year-old man were walking on the sidewalk in the 300 block of Elgin Avenue in central Winnipeg when an unknown man ran up to the woman and pushed her to the ground. The 85-year-old man tried to intervene and was punched in the face. The two victims were repeatedly punched and stomped on while they were on the ground, the news release stated. They were taken to hospital, one in stable condition and the other in unstable condition, with non-life-threatening but serious injuries.

Police responded to reports that a man was running into traffic and running at passing vehicles in the area. They located a suspect, who was uncooperative, police said. Officers used a Taser on the suspect multiple times in order to take him into custody, the news release stated.

Nathan Droy Paul, 28, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. He had a warrant out for suspension of parole/statutory release. He was detained in custody.
