City police have a suspect in custody after a man was assaulted inside a Winnipeg homeless shelter Monday, leaving him with “life-altering” injuries.

The incident occurred at 7:35 a.m., when the suspect 41, and victim, 55, were standing in line for coffee at a shelter space on the 0-100 block of Disraeli Freeway, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday.

“The two began arguing while in line, at which point the suspect turned around and punched the victim in the face, breaking his glasses and causing him to fall backwards to the ground,” WPS said.

“As a result of the assault, the victim suffered a serious life-altering injury. The suspect fled before police attended, and a warrant for his arrest was issued.”

Police said the victim was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Investigators located the suspect at 11:38 p.m. on Oct. 9 on the 300 block of Stanley Street and took him into custody, WPS said.

Arnold Jeffrey Murdock, 41, has been charged with aggravated assault. He was released on an undertaking.
