A couple of “trot-away” — there were no reports of any galloping — steeds are back with their owners after a brief, riderless adventure in Charleswood Tuesday morning.

And city police — not the mounted variety — lent a hand in getting the escapees back to their nearby farm.

A post on the Winnipeg Police Service Facebook page says two horses were spotted trotting riderless along Wilkes Avenue at about 8:30 Tuesday morning. Officers, some neighbours and the animals’ owners were eventually able to rein in the escapees and lead them back home.

A post on the Winnipeg Police Service Facebook page says the horses were spotted trotting along Wilkes Avenue at about 8:30 and they made an unscheduled appearance a couple of blocks away near Oak Park High School.

Officers, some neighbours and the animals’ owners were eventually able to rein in the mavericks and lead them home.

The horses travelled several kilometres from their farm before they were apprehended near the CN Rail line near Community Row and Wilkes.

“It’s not every day you hear “two horses in custody” come over the police radio — but anyone working in west Winnipeg this morning heard just that,” police wrote.

“West District officers were quickly on scene, working with neighbours to corral the horses and keep them out of harm’s way. The owners arrived just as fast, helping guide their horses home with a little police escort for good measure.”

Police said the horses weren’t injured and there were no reports of near-misses with vehicle traffic.

They noted that all it took to calm the animals was a “steady hand” and a “reassuring hug” until their owners arrived.
