Winnipeg real estate board leadership changes

The Winnipeg Regional Real Estate Board’s chief executive is leaving her role after nearly a decade on the job.

Marina James’s decision takes effect on Halloween. She helmed the entity during the COVID-19 pandemic, when housing markets across the country saw massive booms in demand and interest rates changed quickly.

James chaired a national task force, in 2023, tasked with providing recommendations to the Canadian Real Estate Association to turn Realtor.ca into a for-profit subsidiary.

James received the CREA’s Association Executives Network Award of Excellence in 2024; she was lauded for leading by example and being a visionary.

She’s served as chair of the Manitoba Hydro Electric Board and vice chair of the Inland Port Special Planning Authority.

Crystal Hollas, the WRREB’s senior vice-president and chief privacy officer, will become the organization’s next chief executive. She’s worked closely with James for nearly a decade and was chosen via “a planned and thoughtful succession process,” a WRREB news release states.

Hollas has a law degree and more than 19 years of experience with the real estate board. She’ll become CEO on Nov. 3.

Winnipeg to host Western Canada Economic Forum

Business leaders across Western Canada will convene in Winnipeg next year for a two-day economic conference.

The 2026 Western Canada Economic Forum is slated for the Fairmont Winnipeg on Jan. 22 and 23. Leaders from the Manitoba and federal governments will speak, as will experts from Export Development Canada, Deloitte and the business councils of British Columbia and Alberta, among others.

Attendees are set to discuss how a strong Western Canadian economy helps the entire nation, and how the national economy can support growth in western provinces. Roundtables include investment attraction, financing business growth and economic forecasting.

Regina held the 2025 forum; the inaugural meet, in 2024, happened in Calgary.
