Bill to detain people on meth passes
5:20 PM
After a month of back-and-forth accusations between the government and the Tories, the proposed law to extend the time a person can be detained in a detox centre has been passed.
Bill 48 passed third reading Wednesday afternoon following a hastily called news conference in which Premier Wab Kinew, Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham and a paramedic asked the Tories to support the bill.
The Tories had said more community consultation should be conducted before a building on Disraeli Freeway should be turned into a holding centre.
The proposed law allows for a person in a meth-induced state to be held for as long as 72 hours. Currently, the time allowed is 24 hours.
The bill passed by a vote of 51-1. Fort Garry MLA Mark Wasyliw, an independent, voted against the government bill.

11:33 AM
A teenage girl has been charged with manslaughter after a younger girl was slain in Opaskwayak Cree Nation this weekend.
The Manitoba First Nations Police Service was sent to a home in the community shortly before 2:30 p.m. Saturday and found the injured 15-year-old girl. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mounties arrested an Opaskwayak youth, 17, on Tuesday. She was remanded into custody.
RCMP and the MFNPS continue to investigate.
Knife-wielding man robs west Portage Avenue gas station
11:05 AM
A man is charged after a gas station was robbed at knifepoint Sunday evening.
The incident happened on the 3600 block of Portage Avenue shortly before 6:15 p.m.
Officers arrested a 32-year-old man in the area. He has been charged with robbery and was detained in custody.
One dead, one seriously injured in Hwy. 59 collision
9:56 AM
A driver was killed when his vehicle veered into the opposite lane on Highway 59, colliding with a semi-truck Tuesday morning.
RCMP were sent to the crash site — north of the intersection with Provincial Road 311, in the Rural Municipality of Hanover — at 8:50 a.m.
A southbound vehicle driven by a 76-year-old Grande Pointe resident collided with the northbound truck, police said in a news release Wednesday. The man’s passenger, a 73-year-old woman from the same community, suffered serious injuries and was flown to hospital by STARS air ambulance.
The driver of the truck, a 47-year-old La Broquerie man, was not hurt, police said.
Security personnel threatened with hatchet in Henderson Highway robbery
9:26 AM
A woman accused of pulling out a hatchet and threatening security personnel after being caught stealing at a Henderson Highway business has been arrested.
The Winnipeg Police Service said the woman was leaving a store on the 1100 block without paying for merchandise when a guard stopped her at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Security personnel were taking back the goods when the woman pulled out the hatchet and threatened them, police said.
Patrol officers found a woman nearby and arrested her shortly after noon. They seized a hatchet.
The woman, 30, has been charged with robbery and failing to comply with an undertaking. She was also wanted on several warrants. Police kept her in custody.
Kings snap Jets winning streak
6:06 AM
Adrian Kempe has become a frequent Winnipeg Jets tormenter.
The Los Angeles Kings winger scored the decisive goal in Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over the Jets at Crypto.com Arena, with Kevin Fiala (on the power play) and Drew Doughty (into an empty net) supplying the others.
Kempe has now recorded at least one point in six consecutive games against the Jets and he’s produced five goals and 10 points during that span.
The Jets, who slipped to 9-4-0 as their three-game winning streak was snapped, are back in action on Friday against the San Jose Sharks as they continue a six-game road trip.
Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey appeared to open the scoring at 8:39 of the first period when his point shot beat Darcy Kuemper, but the goal was waved off immediately for goalie interference on Gabe Vilardi — who made contact with the Kings goalie after entering the blue paint.
After plenty of deliberation, the Jets used a coach’s challenge, suggesting it wasn’t actually goalie interference but the call was upheld and Winnipeg was given a penalty for delay of game.
Kuemper made 23 saves to record the 37th shutout of his career, while Connor Hellebuyck finished with 23 saves in his 10th start of the season.
Captain Adam Lowry made his season debut for the Jets, finishing the game with one shot on goal and four hits in just over 14 minutes of ice time.
