Police seek public’s help to ID suspect

City police are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect connected with an assault outside of a downtown nightclub in June.

Police released surveillance images of the individual they believe is involved with a serious assault involving an 18-year-old man in a parking lot near the nightclub in the 400 block of Main Street as it was closing around 2:30 a.m. on June 28.

Anyone who knows the identity or whereabouts of this suspect is asked to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219, or anonymously at Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

City asks for input on Garden City library

Winnipeggers are being asked to help design a new library in a shopping mall.

The Mike O’Shaughnessy Library, to be located inside Garden City Shopping Centre, is planned to open late next year.

Members of the public can provide input on the branch’s theme, design and potential public art installations on Nov. 26 (4-7 p.m.) and on an online survey open until Dec. 3.

“We’re really excited to have the public share their feedback and have their say,” Coun. Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan) said Monday.

“It is an exciting project that will bring a brand new library to northwest Winnipeg.”

Two arrested as drugs seized

Two people are facing drug trafficking charges after Winnipeg police searched two homes in West Kildonan and Garden City.

Police seized $117,000 worth of drugs, $270,000 in illegal cigarettes and more than $21,000 in cash.

As part of a guns and gangs unit investigation, officers pulled over a vehicle in the 400 block of Jefferson Avenue on Nov. 9. A 37-year-old male driver was arrested, found in possession of cocaine and proceeds of crime, police stated in a news release Tuesday. A female passenger was arrested, but later released without charges.

Officers executed search warrants in the 400 block of Jefferson Avenue and in the 1-99 block of Teakwood Avenue, seizing methamphetamine, cocaine, illegal cigarettes, cash a money counter and drug-packaging materials.

A 45-year-old woman was arrested following the Teakwood Avenue search. Both were released on undertakings and their names haven’t been publicly released.

Man arrested after gun pointed at youth

A young man accused of pointing a sawed-off shotgun at several youths in O-Chi-Chak-Ko-Sipi early Monday morning has been arrested.

Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP were called to the community at midnight, after a man was spotted walking around with a gun.

Mounties went to a home on the First Nation, which is on the northwest shore of Lake Manitoba, and arrested an 18-year-old. The officers found the sawed-off shotgun at the rear of the house, along with ammunition.

Mounties say the suspect had pointed the gun at several youths.

The 18-year-old has been charged with several firearms offences. He was let out ahead of a court date.

Measles exposure in Winkler

The provincial government is notifying the public of a new exposure site in Winkler, where people may have been exposed to measles.

Public health officials said Monday anyone who was at Outpost Grill at Co-op Cardlock, on Manitoba Provincial Trunk Highway 3, on Oct. 25 from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Oct. 26 from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. should check their immunization records and ensure they are up to date with measles vaccines.

The announcement of a new exposure site in Manitoba came the same day international health experts announced Canada was no longer designated a measles-free country, for the first time since 1998.

There have been 5,138 measles cases in Canada this year, including 247 confirmed cases in Manitoba.

Firefighters battle North End blaze

Winnipeg firefighters were called to the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue late Sunday night after reports of a fire in a vacant house — the second blaze at the property this year.

Crews arrived shortly after 11 p.m. and launched an interior attack, bringing the fire under control just before midnight. No one was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The same home previously caught fire in June. All occupants in that fire were able to escape before fire crews arrived. One person was treated by paramedics but did not require hospitalization.
