GM Kyle Walters returning to Bombers

5:44 PM

The Canadian Mafia remains intact.

Less than an hour after announcing the return of head coach Mike O’Shea, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers revealed that general manager Kyle Walters will also be back with the club in 2026.

The terms of their new contracts have not yet been disclosed. They were both on deals that were set to expire.

Walters, a 52-year-old from St. Thomas, Ont., has been Winnipeg’s GM since 2014. He was the interim GM in 2013 after the club fired Joe Mack.

He initially joined the club in 2010 as a special teams co-ordinator after playing seven seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as a defensive back.

O’Shea remaining with Blue and Gold

4:46 PM

Mike O’Shea isn’t going anywhere.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced late Friday afternoon that their longtime head coach will remain with the team.

O’Shea was in Toronto earlier this week to meet with the Argonauts about their head coaching vacancy. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats had also requested permission to speak with O’Shea.

O’Shea, a 55-year-old from North Bay, Ont., had just finished the third and final year of his contract with the Bombers in 2025.

In O’Shea’s 11 seasons in Winnipeg, the Bombers have gone 117-77 in the regular season and 9-7 in the playoffs, including two Grey Cup victories.

Details surrounding his new deal have not yet been disclosed. “More details to follow,” wrote the Bombers on social media.

Man’s death being investigated as homicide

12:50 PM

Mounties have launched a homicide investigation after a man was found unresponsive in his home Sunday.

Fisher Branch RCMP were called at about 1:30 p.m. after the man, 59, was found.

“This is an isolated incident, and there is no risk to the public,” Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Friday.

Two new measles cases announced

11:39 AM

The province announced two new confirmed cases of measles Friday, for a total of 249 since February.

There are 16 probable cases. The latest numbers are accurate as of Nov. 8.

The government announced seven new cases, for a total of 247, on Nov. 7.

Man arrested after police pursuit

11:28 AM

Police pursued a pickup truck for 20 minutes before arresting a man in a farm field on Wilkes Boulevard.

Officers tried to stop the driver of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado after seeing it in the area of Oakdale Drive and Roblin Boulevard at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday. Police had noticed the licence plate did not match the vehicle.

The police helicopter monitored the truck, and tire-deflation devices were used to damage the Silverado’s tires. The damaged truck continued south on a residential gravel road on the 2000 block of Wilkes before going into the field, where police boxed it in.

Officers seized an airsoft rifle, about 55 grams of what is believed to be methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. The driver was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Two police vehicles sustained minor damage in the incident, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday.

A 24-year-old man faces charges of flight while pursued by a peace officer and possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He was also charged with multiple Highway Traffic Act offences.

The man was released on undertakings.

Granite Curling Club gets say on parking before development

10:48 AM

The Manitoba Municipal Board has ruled that the city must work with the Granite Curling Club to come up with an “adequate” parking plan before a development proposal for an affordable-housing building next door is approved.

In a 48-page decision released Friday, the board said it accepts that parking is needed to keep the club afloat. It encourages the City of Winnipeg and the club “to find accessible, adequate and ongoing parking” to replace any spots that would be lost through the construction of the 111-unit building on municipal-owned land before a development plan is issued by the city.

The curling club had argued if the development goes ahead, it would lose 45 of its 80 parking spots and would no longer be financially viable.
