A man is dead after he lost control of an electric scooter in Minnedosa.
RCMP were sent to Third Avenue Northwest at 4 p.m. Tuesday and found the injured man lying on the road and the scooter nearby.
The man, 45, was taken to hospital and died there.
An investigation determined the man, who was not wearing a helmet, lost control of the scooter and “collided with the roadway,” Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.
Save-On-Foods workers ratify deal
1:59 PM
About 400 unionized Save-On-Foods employees in Winnipeg have ratified a three-year collective agreement that includes “significant wage increases” and “improved benefits.”
The employees are represented by Christian Labour Association of Canada Local 306. Ninety-one per cent of the vote was for ratification. The union has represented Save-On-Foods workers in Manitoba since 2016.
“The new contract provides retroactive wage increases and annual top-rate increases for each year of the term. Structural improvements to the wage grid will allow employees to progress more quickly through wage levels,” a Wednesday news release said.
There are five Save-On-Foods stores in Manitoba, all in Winnipeg.
New bursary for emergency medical responder students
1:40 PM
The provincial government has created a new bursary program for emergency medical responder students.
Students who complete program training will receive the $5,000 bursary by entering a one-year agreement requiring them to work in rural Manitoba.
“We’re offering financial help to make enrolling in a course more appealing, and we’re putting trainees in rural municipalities, where they can get hands-on experience on real-world emergency calls and fall in love with rural Manitoba,” Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said in a news release Wednesday.
Police launch new e-ticketing system
10:52 AM
City police have launched the first phase of a new electronic ticketing system for Highway Traffic Act offences.
The technology was set to be deployed in some traffic-enforcement vehicles Wednesday after being tested internally. A full rollout is planned for next year, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release.
“Under the new system, motorists who are issued an offence notice for a traffic infraction will receive a printed ticket directly at roadside,” the release said. “The e-tickets are clear, legible and easy to read.”
This modernized process enhances “accuracy and accountability,” the WPS said.
“As the information is inputted and tracked electronically, the system reduces the potential for administrative errors and provides accurate record-keeping. As a result, officers will spend less time on paperwork and more time on the road promoting safety within our community.”
Screening technology debuts at Winnipeg’s airport
10:33 AM
A CT X-ray machine has been installed on a security screening line at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.
Passengers travelling through lines equipped with the technology are not required to remove plastic bags containing permitted liquids, aerosols and gels from their carry-on bags. They do not have to remove medical devices or large electronics such as laptops from their bags, either.
The machine is on Line 4 at the airport’s domestic/international checkpoint. It uses advanced three-dimensional rotatable images, enhancing the ability to detect explosives and other threats.
The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, a federal Crown corporation, said in a news release Wednesday that it looks forward to working with the airport to install CT X-ray on all screening lines.
The technology is “an important step forward in enhancing the travel experience for our passengers,” airport CEO Nick Hays said in the release.
