WINNIPEG – Winnipeg police say a man is facing charges after a child was grabbed by an adult stranger in the bathroom of an elementary school.

Officers were called Thursday to the school in the south end for a person who allegedly entered the building, hid in a bathroom stall and confronted a child after they exited another stall.

They say the child broke away and ran to tell a teacher, while the suspect fled to a nearby mall.

A 28-year-old accused was charged with assault, forcible confinement and failing to comply with a prohibition regarding children.

Const. Dani McKinnon says the accused is known to police and has a criminal history involving children.

She says the child did not require medical attention and that police are working with their family.

McKinnon says parents and guardians should talk to their kids about safety and remind them to tell an adult if something feels off.

“The light at the end of the tunnel is nothing happened to this child physically in terms of harm, thank God,” McKinnon told reporters Friday. “At the end of the day, if something looks wrong, feels wrong, fight your way out of it. Talk to a safe adult.”
