Two suspects arrested, two on the loose after Toronto home invasion and kidnapping

TORONTO – Two suspects in an armed home invasion and kidnapping in northwest Toronto have been arrested and two more remain on the loose, police said Thursday as they appealed to the public for information that could help them identify the fugitives.

Four suspects drove up to a home in the Martin Grove Road and John Garland Boulevard area late Tuesday night, and three of them approached a man who had just arrived in a red Honda Civic, police said in a news conference.

The man is an acquaintance of the homeowner, and police said they believe the homeowner was the suspects’ target.

One of the suspects showed a handgun and the group forced the man into the back seat of his own car before driving around for about an hour while making demands at gunpoint, police said. Some suspects followed along in a different vehicle, they said.

“They were buying time for the homeowner to return home,” said Insp. Kristy Smith of the force’s hold up squad.

They eventually drove back to the home and the suspects forced both the man and the newly arrived homeowner inside, holding them at gunpoint alongside a third person who had just woken up, police said.

One of the suspects showed a shotgun and demanded valuables, police said. The suspects allegedly made off with cash, jewelry, clothes, electronics, cannabis and both the Honda Civic and a Ford pickup truck belonging to the homeowner.

Police were called shortly before 1 a.m. and spotted both stolen vehicles around 1:45 a.m. near Highway 401 and Weston Road. Officers blocked one of the vehicles and one of the suspects tried to run away on foot, pointing a handgun at the officers, they said.

That suspect was arrested and a loaded handgun was recovered, police said.

The stolen pickup was sighted shortly afterward but escaped after charging at a scout car, police said. It was later located near St. Clair Avenue West and Runnymede Road, and a suspect was arrested after a short chase on foot, they said.

The suspects’ vehicle has not yet been found, nor do investigators have a description of it, police said Thursday in asking for any dashcam footage of the area.

The two suspects who have been arrested are 30 and 35, both from Toronto. They face nearly two dozen charges combined, including kidnapping, robbery with a firearm and theft of a motor vehicle with violence.

“We are continuing to seek the public’s assistance to identify and locate the other two individuals believed to be involved in this kidnapping and home invasion,” Smith said.

“While home invasions in the city of Toronto have dropped by 40 per cent … compared to this time last year, they remain a serious concern for both police and residents. If you know something, please say something.”
