Main Street water main break mitigated
4:50 PM
City crews have stopped water flowing from a water main break near the North End Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Crews working on the headworks buildings near the plant accidentally damaged a water main, the city said in a news release Friday afternoon.
Main Street remains closed between Seaforth Avenue and Chief Peguis Trail due to extensive flooding caused by the break. Crews are on-site removing water and ice and applying traction control to the roadway surface.
Customers in the area have water service however, the city says they may continue to experience discoloured water.
The city says it will reopen the roads as quickly as possible and will provide further updates via social media.

One sent to hospital in high-rise blaze
2:09 PM
One person was sent to hospital in stable condition after a fire broke out in a high-rise building near Osborne Village early Friday.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service officers were sent to the building on Mayfair Place at 5:41 a.m. Firefighters attacked the blaze and had it under control at 6:30 a.m., a city news release said. Most residents were able to return to their suites.
Earlier Friday, firefighters doused a blaze at a house on the 400 block of Alexander Avenue.
Crews were sent to the scene at 1 a.m. and attacked the fire from outside until it was safe to enter the house. It was declared under control by 2:12 a.m. There were no injuries. The city deployed its emergency social services team to provide temporary support for displaced residents.
On Dec. 6, firefighters were sent to a vacant building on the 500 block of Main Street at about 11:10 a.m. Crews declared a fire there under control an hour later.
There were previous fires in the building last month and on March 8, 2024.
The three recent fires are under investigation.
More pistachio-related recalls
1:42 PM
More kinds of pistachio products distributed in Manitoba have been recalled because of salmonella.
Notices for Allo Simonne’s pistachio matcha spread and chocolate bars were issued Wednesday. A recall for items made by Pista Green sold at Gill’s Supermarket on Pembina Highway, and at another Gill’s location on Inkster Boulevard, was issued Dec. 5.
Previous recalls were issued earlier this month and in November. More information about food recalls is available online.
One Manitoban is among 155 people across Canada who became ill from a salmonella outbreak linked to various brands of pistachios and pistachio-containing products, the Public Health Agency of Canada said earlier this month.
Officers hurt during police chase
12:58 PM
Two police officers suffered minor injuries after their vehicles were rammed during a chase Thursday night.
Winnipeg Police Service officers were told shortly before 10 p.m. that a 44-year-old man was driving a 1993 Ford Aerostar erratically in multiple Transcona parking lots. Officers learned the man had made “concerning comments” about his safety and the safety of others, a Friday news release stated.
Police tried to stop the van at Lagimodiere Boulevard at the south Perimeter Highway overpass, but said the driver continued.
Officers attempted a “forcible stop” near Leclaire Road and Highway 59, when the van rammed two cruisers, police said, causing one to slide into a ditch.
Police stopped the minivan near Île des Chênes at about 10:45 p.m., police said.
The man faces several charges, including assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and uttering threats. He was detained in custody.
Eight more confirmed measles cases: province
12:48 PM
The province announced eight new confirmed measles cases Friday, for a total of 278 since February.
There are 23 probable cases, an increase of one from the previous weekly update. The latest numbers are accurate as of Dec. 6.
The Manitoba government also notified the public Friday of another location where people might have been exposed to measles: Bethesda Regional Health Centre’s emergency room in Steinbach, from 1:25 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Public health officials asked anyone who was there during that time to check their immunization records and ensure they are up to date with measles vaccines.
Swan River RCMP investigate after shots fired in Sapotaweyak Cree Nation
11:45 AM
RCMP are investigating an armed attempted home invasion in Sapotaweyak Cree Nation after someone fired shots outside a home and disabled security cameras.
Police said a woman inside the home reported a man known to her tried to force his way in. He then shot the cameras, cut an internet cable and fled the property, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Friday.
Officers found a man hiding in the bedroom of another home, RCMP said. He has been charged with 19 offences.
Ammunition was seized from the home where the man was found, and guns were later found at another location.

RCMP arrest Springfield man twice, seize 19 guns
11:44 AM
Oakbank RCMP are investigating after a 53-year-old woman reported the power was deliberately disconnected at her Rural Municipality of Springfield home twice.
Police said the first incident happened on July 31 and the second on the afternoon of Oct. 8. The incidents led officers to identify a 54-year-old man as a suspect and to seize improperly stored guns from an area home. Police also found several of the suspect’s firearms were unaccounted for.
Officers arrested the man on Oct. 14, charging him with criminal harassment and unsafe storage of a firearm, then released him with conditions. The man was arrested again Wednesday after police obtained a search warrant for a home in the RM of Alexander, where officers seized more guns and ammunition.
The man was taken into custody on additional charges. In total, officers seized three restricted guns, 16 rifles and ammunition. Police are still investigating.
