AFTER a thrilling triple-header Wednesday, the Boston Fleet are still the team to beat. The club shut out New York 2-0 in the second game of the night. The Fleet remained flawless on the season and now sit seven points clear of the second-place spot going into Friday night’s clash against the Minnesota Frost, with six of the teams jostling in a logjam separated by less than a win’s-worth of points between them.
With another edition of The Backcheck, here’s the other storylines that went down in the week that was.
Riley Smith / THE CANADIAN PRESS Montreal Victoire captain Marie-Philip Poulin (right) scores on Toronto Sceptres goaltender and Ste. Anne’s own Raygan Kirk Wednesday in a shootout during the PWHL Takeover Tour in Halifax.
Highlight of the week
THE first game of Wednesday’s triple-header opened the night with a bang — and spoiled Maritime fans of the PWHL Takeover Tour in Halifax with a dandy. The Montreal Victoire and Toronto Sceptres found themselves in a shootout after the two clubs went toe-to-toe. Marie-Philip Poulin reminded everyone how she got her nickname, as “Captain Clutch” was the lone goal-scorer in the shootout, picking up the extra point for the club. Ste. Anne’s Raygan Kirk, who Poulin managed to bulge the twine against, was one of the three stars of the game after a stellar 30-save performance.
Cool Campbell lifts Goldeneyes
SPEAKING of three stars, Brandon’s Kristen Campbell was named second star of Tuesday’s contest as the Vancouver Goldeneyes played host to the Ottawa Charge at the Pacific Coliseum.
Campbell stopped 33 shots on the night and stopped the late push by Ottawa, even after letting in Anna Shokhina’s first goal of the season in the third period. With the win, Campbell improved to a .903 save percentage and helped lift Vancouver to third place in the standings.
Game to watch in Week 5
TIED for points in the standings, the Saturday matinee clash between the Victoire and the Goldeneyes should be the game to watch (2 p.m. CT, CBC).
Montreal has the upper hand with the point differential in the standings, happily sitting in second place, but Vancouver could leapfrog the Victoire and gain sole position of second place with a regulation win.
