TORONTO – Canada Border Services Agency says a drug smuggling investigation has led to the arrests of two suspects who allegedly used online advertisements to recruit women to smuggle cannabis out of Toronto Pearson International Airport.
It says the nine-month investigation, carried out jointly with the RCMP, began after two Canadian women were detained in Nigeria while trying to bring cannabis into the country.
The RCMP and CBSA allege both women were recruited through an advertisement on “LeoList,” a classifieds website, with an offer of up to $20,000 for transporting illegal drugs while travelling overseas out of Pearson Airport.
They say officers intercepted an additional shipment of 29 kilograms of cannabis before it left Canada.
The suspects, one from Toronto and the other from the United Kingdom, are facing multiple drug smuggling-related charges.
The CBSA says the accused men were released on bail and will appear in court on Jan. 16.
