Man charged with arson after apartment fire

A man has been charged with arson with disregard for human life after a fire broke out in an apartment building Sunday.

Police were sent to the 100 block of Clarke Street shortly after 3:30 p.m. and were told by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service members that a fire there was being investigated as suspicious in nature.

Police arrested a 52-year-old resident inside the building.

“Through their investigation, officers learned that the suspect had set fire to furniture inside his apartment, which quickly spread, caused significant damage and endangered the lives of other tenants,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.

The man was detained in custody.
