MONTREAL – Charles Milliard has officially entered the race for the leadership of the Quebec Liberal Party to succeed Pablo Rodriguez, who resigned in December amid a leadership campaign-financing scandal.

Milliard, a former head of Quebec’s chamber of commerce, finished second in the contest that Rodriguez won last June.

A rally was scheduled for Saturday morning in Yamachiche, Que., west of Trois-Rivières.

Milliard visited Liberal headquarters in Quebec City on Monday to submit his application, buoyed by the reported support of at least 11 colleagues in the National Assembly.

Leadership hopefuls have until Feb. 13 to submit their candidacy, with 750 signatures from party members and a deposit of $30,000 required. A leadership convention is expected on March 14.

Beauce farmer Mario Roy has also entered the race after placing a distant fifth last summer.
