Brandon residents were promised tax relief on Tuesday in response to an influx of $1 million in provincial dollars for local waste and recreation projects.

Mayor Jeff Fawcett told an afternoon news conference his city has secured additional funding for infrastructure initiatives that will allow municipal taxes to be lowered roughly two per cent.

“Every dollar of provincial support helps stretch our municipal budget further, reducing long-term maintenance and project costs,” said Fawcett, who was joined by Premier Wab Kinew and Municipal Affairs Minister Glen Simard at the Brandon Community Sportsplex — one of the recipients of new funding.

The province has pledged $400,000 to expand Eastview Landfill services, $400,000 to renovate changerooms at Andrews Field and $235,000 to resurface and make accessibility improvements to the sportsplex parking lot.
