The last of the remaining Canadian Armed Forces members in Pimicikamak Cree Nation were set to depart the northern Manitoba First Nation on Friday.

The announcement was made in a joint statement by federal ministers Mandy Gull-Masty, Eleanor Olszweski and David McGuinty posted to X on Friday afternoon.

CAF members first touched down in Pimicikamak on Jan. 9, with a specialized team of engineers, logisticians and technical specialists sent to work with PCN leadership after power was lost at the First Nation in late December.

About 4,000 people were evacuated from the First Nation, located more than 700 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

“As of today, the CAF’s mission in PCN has been completed, and their reports summarizing their assessment and recommendations have been submitted to Chief (David) Monias,” the statement said.

“We thank all deployed CAF members for their work in Pimicikamak and recognize the contributions they have made to support the community and the ongoing repair and recovery work taking place.”
