Jets down Devils to begin road trip

NEWARK, N.J — The Winnipeg Jets downed the New Jersey Devils 4-3 on Tuesday night to kick off a four-game road trip.

Mark Scheifele and Gabe Vilardi led the way with a goal and an assist while linemate Kyle Connor had two helpers. Cole Koepke and Nino Niederreiter had the other tallies.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 26 of 29 shots he faced.

The Jets improved to 21-24-7 and remain eight points back of the final Western Conference wildcard playoff spot, now with 30 regular season games remaining.

They return to action on Thursday night in Tampa Bay.

Clear the way for Melt Stegall, Sled Penner

That name again is Mr. Plow.

The Simpsons-inspired moniker was one of 12 winners as voted on by Winnipeggers in the city’s first Name That Plow contest.

More than 1,700 entries were received, the city said in a news release Tuesday. That list was narrowed down to 51 before an online vote crowned the best dozen.

The winning names are now displayed on the side of 12 of the city’s snow clearing equipment.

The Winnipeg Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers were also well-represented among the other winning entries:

Winnipeggers also voted for their favourite team name for a group of sidewalk and path clearing machines, as submitted by local classrooms. Brrrrr-ger Kings, proposed by Ms. Tugby’s Ecole Van Belleghem class, was the victor. The class will join Mayor Scott Gillingham for a pizza party at city hall to celebrate.

Missing 91-year-old woman found

A vulnerable 91-year-old woman who was reported missing over the weekend has been found, Winnipeg police said Tuesday.

Police provided no further details, including where she was found or her condition.

Police issued a silver alert while they searched for Anna Polgar.

Investigators had shared details of sightings in the 400 block of Tache Avenue on Saturday and 1700 block of Portage Avenue on Sunday.

Berens River School up in flames: RCMP

Firefighters are battling a blaze that engulfed Berens River School in the early hours of the morning Tuesday.

RCMP confirmed its Berens River detachment received an emergency call about a fire inside the community’s school around 3 a.m.

The school, which runs kindergarten through Grade 9 programming, was empty at the time. No injuries have been reported.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner has been made aware of the situation, RCMP said.

Berens River Adult Learning Centre has cancelled classes for the day in response. “What a sad day for Berens River,” the learning centre wrote in a post on Facebook.
