A 28-year-old Calgary man is facing charges after a drone was used to drop a drug-filled package onto the grounds of Stony Mountain Institution.

RCMP said the package, discovered at about 1 a.m. Sunday at the prison north of Winnipeg, contained balloons filled with about $600,000 worth of drugs.

Officers from the Stonewall detachment stopped a vehicle near Road 72 North and Highway 7 in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood.

Inside, police said officers found a drone at the feet of the male passenger. The drone had a large package attached to it that could be released when triggered, police said.

Officers seized about 355 grams of methamphetamine, 63 grams of cocaine, 60 grams of tobacco and 59 grams of cannabis concentrate, known as “shatter” thanks to its glass-like consistency.

RCMP said the passenger was charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. The driver of the vehicle, a 34-year-old Winnipeg woman, was released without charges.

The Correctional Service of Canada estimated the contraband’s value to be more than $750,000.
