City to clear residential streets beginning Thursday morning

The City of Winnipeg says a residential parking ban will take effect Thursday at 7 a.m. and continue until Saturday at 7 p.m.

Residents are advised to keep vehicles off the street during the 12-hour window when their street is scheduled for snow cleaning.

Parking restrictions on winter routes will be lifted Thursday and Friday nights. The winter route ban will be reinstated once the residential ban ends.

Residents can check winnipeg.ca/snow to find out when their street will be cleared.

Red River Co-op sends out millions in cheques

Red River Co-op is sending $38.8 million in equity cheques to its members, based on 2025 fiscal year results.

Members received 10 cents per litre on fuel purchases, two per cent on food purchases and four per cent on the full price of pharmacy prescriptions, the Winnipeg-based co-operative said.

Red River has about 330,000 members, with locations in southern Manitoba, the Interlake and Ontario (Kenora and Dryden). A lifetime membership costs $5.

Members have until April 13 to vote — online or by mail-in card — on the co-op’s next board of directors.

Man charged with assault after picketer pushed by car in RM of Tache

RCMP have arrested a man accused of refusing to stop for people walking on a picket line in the Rural Municipality of Tache, then “pushing” a picketer with his vehicle. 

Mounties from the St. Pierre-Jolys detachment were called to a picket line on Road 52 North at about 1 p.m. on Monday, where they were informed of the assault. Officers learned the victim, a 54-year-old man from Oak Bluff, fell near a ditch after he was hit by a vehicle.

RCMP said the victim approached the driver, who pushed him to the ground before getting back in his vehicle and leaving. The victim suffered minor injuries.

Mounties say the suspect, a 68-year-old man from the RM of Ste. Anne, was charged with assault and assault with a weapon. He was released ahead of a court date in Winnipeg.

Members of the Operating Engineers of Manitoba Local 987, who work at the RM of Tache’s waste management facilities and for its public works department, went on strike Monday morning.

HSC Foundation gets $200,000 boost

Efforts to reduce surgery waitlists in Manitoba are getting a boost with $200,000 in funding for technology to improve diagnostic and surgical capacity at the Health Sciences Centre.

The Health Sciences Centre Foundation announced the most recent contribution to its Operation Excellence campaign on Tuesday, with $100,000 from independent IT and business consulting firm CGI. That donation received a matching $100,000 contribution from Manitoba businessman Chuck Loewen.

The funds will go toward eliminating surgery waitlists, the HSC Foundation stated in a news release, but the specifics of what they will help pay for haven’t been announced. A previous acquisition through the Operation Excellence campaign was Manitoba’s first Da Vinci Xi surgical robot, a piece of advanced technology used for complex surgeries.

Man accused of stabbing dog

An Ebb and Flow First Nation man was taken into custody Tuesday accused of uttering threats and stabbing a dog.

Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP received a report at about 12:30 p.m. Feb. 9 that a man had threatened an individual and assaulted a dog. When officers arrived on scene in Ebb and Flow First Nation, they found a dead dog that had been stabbed. In a news release Tuesday, RCMP said police determined a man had been seen in the yard brandishing a weapon, and that the same suspect went to a different residence and uttered threats against an individual.

Daniel St. Paul, 37, was charged with uttering threats and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

Connor rejoins Jets

Kyle Connor was ready to get back to work.

The Winnipeg Jets forward decided to skip the festivities at the U.S. Capitol and White House to rejoin his teammates.

Connor was skating with Mark Scheifele and Gabe Vilardi on Tuesday is expected to be in the lineup on Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks when the Jets return to action after the Olympic break.

The Jets won’t have goalie Connor Hellebuyck or defenceman Josh Morrissey in uniform.

Eric Comrie was scheduled to start in goal for the Jets against the Canucks even before Hellebuyck led the United States to the gold medal in men’s hockey.

Morrissey suffered an upper-body injury at the Olympics and was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday.

It also appears the Jets will be without Neal Pionk, as he missed Tuesday’s workout.

The absence of both Morrissey and Pionk opens the door for defenceman Ville Heinola to make his season debut with the Jets.

The Jets also recalled defenceman Kale Clague from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

Man accused in sex charges attacked arresting officers: police

A 36-year-old man faces charges after police say he attacked two officers who were trying to arrest him.

RCMP were sent to a residence in Melita shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday to arrest the man on two outstanding sexual interference warrants.

The man resisted arrest and a struggle ensued with two officers, with one forced to deploy a Taser, a Tuesday RCMP news release said.

The fight continued as the man made his way back into the home and barricaded himself in a room.

Police called for backup and the man was eventually taken into custody at about 11:30 p.m.

In addition to sex charges, the accused now faces two counts of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, disarming a police officer and mischief under $5,000.

He remains in custody.

Winnipeg trucker, company facing charges after driver drove without wheels

Ontario Provincial Police have charged a Winnipeg truck driver and the company he drives for after he was spotted on Highway 17 just outside of Kenora without a full set of wheels on his tractor-trailer.

OPP said Tuesday the incident took place on Feb. 10 just before 11 p.m. in the MacNicol Township, east of Kenora.

OPP said the 28-year-old male driver was missing a full set of rear-axle tires, and was charged with failing to ensure daily inspection report was accurately completed, driving a commercial motor vehicle with major defect in it or in drawn vehicle, and wheel separation.

The company, which the OPP did not name, is also charged with wheel separation.

“While it may sound surprising, this is not something you want to discover while driving behind it at highway speed,” a Facebook post by the OPP said. “Each of these tire assemblies can weigh over 1,000 pounds. When they come off a commercial vehicle, they become an extremely serious hazard and can cause significant damage to property, vehicles, or result in serious injury or loss of life.”

Erin McCrea, regional media and communications advisor with the OPP told the Free Press on Tuesday that it’s important to report these incidents.

“Calling it in could prevent a serious collision or save a life,” she said.

Crash causes traffic delays

A truck was hanging off the side of a bridge Tuesday morning as a collision closed part of the Perimeter Highway.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were sent to the collision on the Perimeter at the Fermor Avenue overpass just after 8 a.m.

A Ford F350 with a trailer was travelling southbound on the Perimeter when the trailer jack-knifed and collided with a Dodge Ram, the WPS said in a Tuesday news release. The F350 crashed into the guardrail on the bridge and dangled off the edge.

Emergency responders from the WPS, RCMP, Springfield Fire and Rescue and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service safely extracted the driver of the Ford truck. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

A bridge inspector from Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure determined the bridge was safe to drive on and the Perimeter was reopened to traffic in both directions.

Firefighters battle two overnight blazes

At approximately 6 p.m. on Monday the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a two-and-a-half-storey house in the 300 block of Bannerman Avenue.

Fire crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house, but due to the intensity of the fire, could not enter the house. They launched a defensive attack from outside. Once it was safe to do so, they transitioned to an interior fire attack, declaring the fire under control at 8:53 p.m.

All occupants of the house safely evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported. Crews evacuated both neighbouring houses as a precaution. A Winnipeg Transit bus was sent to the scene to provide shelter for the evacuees.

The house sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was activated to provide temporary support to displaced residents.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.

At approximately 4 a.m. Tuesday, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house under construction on Plover Place.

When crews arrived, they found the house engulfed in flames. Firefighters launched a defensive fire attack, declaring the fire under control at 5:19 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
