Over the years, many of us in the camp community have heard the phrase “camp is camp.”
At its core, it’s true. No matter where you go, camp is built on friendships, traditions, laughter and the simple magic of stepping away from everyday life.
But after spending years working with the best summer camps, we’ve also learned something equally important: camp is never just camp. It is deeply shaped by place, people and purpose.
Across Manitoba and northwestern Ontario, summer camps are as diverse and expansive as the landscapes they inhabit. From rolling Prairie grasslands to rugged Canadian Shield rock, from dense boreal forests to the endless shorelines of freshwater lakes. Camps in this region offer young people access to environments that are both breathtaking and formative. Each camp is its own world, with experiences that cannot be replicated.
Some camps invite campers into rustic adventures, sleeping in log cabins, learning archery, riding horses through open fields or exploring the “outback” just beyond the treeline. Others challenge campers to face their fears and discover their strengths on climbing walls, high ropes courses and ziplines that send them soaring through the air. Camps with lakes bring a different rhythm entirely: tubing behind a boat, learning to water ski, paddling a kayak for the first time or navigating winding waterways by canoe. In northwestern Ontario, especially, campers may find themselves portaging between lakes and exploring waterfalls, or camping under skies where the nights are darker and the stars shine brighter than they ever have at home.
Yet, the true value of camp goes far beyond the activities. What makes these experiences transformative is the people who bring them to life. Dedicated camp staff cheer campers on, speak encouragement into moments of uncertainty and help young people discover confidence they didn’t know they had. Whether it’s around a crackling campfire, during a spontaneous soccer game in the rain or in a quiet conversation at sunset, camp staff create spaces where campers feel seen, supported and believed in.
For many children and youth, camp is a place to try something new for the first time. It might be their first time swimming in a lake, sleeping away from home or making friends outside of school. Camp builds independence, resilience, teamwork and a lasting connection to nature, all of which are qualities that are increasingly important in a world where time outdoors and face-to-face connection are becoming more rare.
This is where the work of the Manitoba Camping Association and the Sunshine Fund comes in. Through accreditation, support and advocacy, the MCA helps ensure that camps across Manitoba and northwestern Ontario meet high standards of safety, quality and care. The Sunshine Fund works alongside this mission by helping remove financial barriers, ensuring more children and families can access the life-changing experience of camp.
Simply put, camp would not be camp without campers, and campers would not be at camp without the generosity of donors, partners and supporters who believe in the life-changing power of these experiences. By supporting camps and campership programs, you are investing in young people, in healthier communities and in a lifelong relationship with the outdoors.
Across fields, forests, lakes and rocky landscapes, summer camps continue to shape lives in quiet and profound ways.
