MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Scorpio. (Daylight time begins at 2 a.m.)

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Research and behind-the-scenes discussions might benefit your home and family. In fact, conversations about how to divide or share something — perhaps an inheritance or something related to shared property, debt or taxes — could be significant.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is an excellent day to make future plans based on past events. Because Mercury is retrograde right now, do not initiate new projects; however, you can refine and improve existing projects. Be co-operative with others (for your own benefit).

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You still look magnificent in the eyes of others. In fact, this is a good day to make your pitch about something, wrap up an old deal or rethink goals and plans. Your optimistic attitude will impress someone or perhaps boost your earnings.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Your enthusiastic attitude makes this the perfect time to wrap up big writing projects — manuscripts, books or school papers. You might also tweak travel plans. A few of you will solidify a relationship with someone older or in a position of power. Make time for fun!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You can make use of the Mercury retrograde energy and wrap up old details regarding inheritances, shared property, taxes and debt. If you do this, you’ll be surprised at how swiftly things will flow. Because you might want to stay at home, this all fits for you.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

A candid discussion with a close friend, partner or spouse will be productive or meaningful. You might rehash some old problems or ideas. You might even rethink your involvement with a group or a particular learning project.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This can be a productive day for you because it’s the perfect time to wrap up old business and finish old projects related to your job, health or pet. Discussions with partners and close friends will be serious but pleasant. Whatever you do can have a positive impact on your wealth and assets.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You hold all the cards because the moon is in your sign. Even though you might choose to work, this is a great day for play, socializing, romantic adventure, sports and fun activities with kids. Old flames are back in your world.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Family discussions might be ambitious regarding making improvements or positive changes at home or within a relationship. In fact, romance with someone of an age difference might be taking place. Whatever happens, you can benefit from the wealth and resources of someone else. Ka-ching!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You might see things in a new light and feel encouraged. (Discussions with siblings, relatives and neighbours could lead to this.) You might also take a short trip, which lifts your spirits. Do what you can to improve your home in a practical way.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

People notice you. In fact, some people will know personal details about your private life. (Be aware of this in case you have to do some damage control.) Fortunately, this is a strong day for you to remedy some kind of glitch or past mistake that can benefit you financially or in practical ways.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a positive, upbeat day! It’s an especially good day to wrap up old business or talk to old friends and ex-partners in a joyful, pleasant and mutually productive way. Do something different to give yourself a little adventure, because you want this. Perhaps a change of scenery?

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor James Van Der Beek (1977-2026) shares your birthday. You are perceptive, fiercely independent and persevering. You also have a highly developed intellect. Lucky you! This year’s all about socializing and enjoying life. Let your guard down and loosen up a bit. Have fun, but don’t lose sight of your goals. Old friends might reappear.

Homeless standstill can’t be addressed until province, city collaborate

Dan Lett 5 minute read 3:19 PM CDT

What we have here is a basic failure to understand the dynamics of homelessness.

Last week, the Free Press documented the friction between Osborne Village residents and business owners and homeless individuals seeking refuge at Oak Table, a drop-in centre that provides food, shelter from the heat and cold, and access to social services.

Oak Table operates out of space in St. Augustine Church, located on River Avenue just east of Osborne Street. The aforementioned residents and business owners, as well as employees of a daycare that operates out of the same church, all expressed concerns about discarded drug paraphernalia, garbage and open drug use by the people visiting Oak Table.

It’s not hard to sympathize with people who are tired of dealing with this mess and mayhem. Still, it should be said that Oak Table, a private not-for-profit organization affiliated with an umbrella social services agency called 1JustCity, is not in the wrong place.

Search continues for brothers feared drowned at Nutimik Lake

Zoe Pierce 5 minute read Updated: 6:39 PM CDT

Search-and-rescue crews continued efforts Monday to locate two boys who are presumed drowned after falling into fast-moving rapids at Nutimik Lake on the weekend, as community members and Manitoba Parks begin conversations about preventing future tragedies.

The boys, identified as brothers Aaron Au Ramirez, 13, and Maximo Au Ramirez, 10, were visiting Whiteshell Provincial Park with their father and some friends when they entered the water near the Sturgeon Falls Trail Saturday afternoon.

Lac du Bonnet RCMP received a report of a possible drowning at about 12:40 p.m. Police, along with local emergency responders, searched the shoreline and waterways but were unable to find the boys, RCMP said in a news release.

The Manitoba RCMP Underwater Recovery Team and the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team were later deployed to assist with the search.

Two boys are presumed drowned in Nutimik Lake in the Whiteshell.

RCMP and community search-and-rescue teams are still trying to locate the children, aged 10 and 13, who got caught in fast-moving rapids in Nutimik Lake near Sturgeon Falls Trail in Whiteshell Provincial Park on Saturday.

Lac du Bonnet RCMP received the report of possible drowning at 12:40 p.m. July 18. Police immediately went to the scene, along with local fire personnel and emergency responders, but didn't find the boys despite extensive patrols on the water and on the shoreline, police stated in a news release Sunday.

Manitoba RCMP Underwater Recovery Team  and the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team were deployed to assist in the search. Drones were also used.
