The province’s police watchdog is investigating after they say police in the Halton Region shot and seriously injured a 23-year-old man during a traffic stop.

The SIU says officers with the Halton Regional Police Service were conducting a traffic stop early Sunday when a driver drove toward officers.

The watchdog says a police officer shot at the man, who was struck with bullets multiple times.

They say emergency medical responders transported the man to a hospital where he remains in stable condition.

The SIU says a woman was also in the vehicle at the time of the shooting but was not physically injured.

The watchdog invokes its mandate in incidents involving police that result in serious injuries, death, allegations of sexual assault or of an officer discharging their firearm at a person.
