Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 10/03/2026 (188 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Pollard Banknote Limited is a global leader in high performing instant lottery games and innovative digital solutions and has built a reputation on world-class printing expertise and technology. It’s been a dynamic environment for Cameron Hrycyna, who began his career back in 2014 as a programmer analyst (initially supporting the printing side).
Wanting a change of pace a year later, Hrycyna “threw my hat in the ring” to take on a new position in a growing IT team. From there, he’s been able to play several different roles within that group, ultimately moving from a developer into leadership.
“When I saw an opportunity for building mobile apps and websites, it looked like fun to me,” says Hrycyna, currently director, software development. “I was fairly tech-driven growing up and was looking to absorb as much as possible. In a fast-changing tech world, I appreciate that our people have the ability to grow and do things.”
Hrycyna credits Pollard Banknote’s commitment to learning and development as a key driver of career growth and employee retention. The Winnipeg-based company gives employees a chance to shadow colleagues in other areas and offers financial support for continuing education programs, which included supporting Hrycyna while he completed his certification in project management.
“The organization provides educational training benefits and financial support as long as courses align even slightly with what they’re currently doing or what their aspirations are,” says Murielle Fontaine, vice-president, operations. “Leaders also play an active role, identifying career paths for people who might have significant skill sets that they’re not necessarily using yet. Stretch assignments are provided as opportunities for growth.”
Fontaine’s own career path at Pollard Banknote spans over 20 years and crosses multiple functions, from sales and marketing to game management and design to operations leadership.
“You’re not limited to a career path within a certain area of the business,” says Fontaine. “If you were in sales, like I was, you can move to operations or another department. We have someone who was a press assistant when they started, and now they’re a senior manager on our innovation team.”
Pollard Banknote’s culture “still feels like a very large family,” she says. “We’ve spent a lot of time fostering one-on-one meetings with our team members to make sure they’re getting the proper support.
“Leaders focus on knowing employees not only as employees but as people and strive to ensure they value them as individuals first and foremost and as colleagues second.”
Mentorship has been equally important for Hrycyna, first as a recipient, now as someone who pays it forward, meeting with team members monthly or bi-weekly.
“It’s very much a symbiotic relationship,” he says. “It’s our opportunity to help them grow and it’s their opportunity to help us grow so that the team becomes stronger over time.”
Like Fontaine and Hrycyna, many employees stay for decades, some as long as 40 years.
“There are always new challenges to take on,” says Hrycyna. “As a curious and creative person, that’s one of the reasons that keeps me here. The first is our people. We’re backed by a great group of people around us.
“When I started in this IT group in 2014, it was just myself and three other people. Now we’re close to 80, so we’ve grown quite a bit. It’s very exciting times. Looking ahead, the sky’s the limit with where we’re going to take it.”
