Jets’ winning streak snapped

The urgency simply wasn’t there as the Winnipeg Jets lost 4-1 to the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday at Canada Life Centre.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak and six-game point streak (4-0-2) for the Jets, who slipped to 26-27-10 for the season.

The Jets’ inability to generate enough offensive opportunities was compounded by giving up three goals in a span of 104 seconds during the second period after Morgan Barron had made it 1-0 for the home side.

Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, making his sixth consecutive start, finished with 30 saves.

The Jets are back in action on Thursday against the New York Rangers.

LRSD approves 2026-27 budget, tax hike

The Louis Riel School Division is raising property taxes by 10 per cent to eliminate an accumulated deficit and balance its budget.

The St. Vital-based board of trustees finalized its financial plan for 2026-27 during a public meeting on Tuesday.

The $281.7-million budget increases the local mill rate by 9.9 per cent.

“The budget prioritizes core classroom support while maintaining essential system-wide services and investments in student learning and wellbeing,” the division said in a news release.

The release states unnamed “cost reductions, deferrals, and efficiencies” were found during this year’s budgeting process.

Board chair Sandy Nemeth called it “regrettable” that the board is deferring infrastructure improvements for another year. “However, classroom and student needs must come first,” Nemeth said in the release.

West St. Paul school expected to open as early as 2027

West St. Paul residents are one step closer to getting a new elementary school.

School and government officials celebrated the groundbreaking of a kindergarten-to-Grade 8 building in the Meadowlands development on Tuesday.

The roughly 82,000-square-foot facility is expected to open as early as September 2027.

Its initial capacity will be 675 students, although the province said it will be able to accommodate up to 800 children if enrolment surges.

The school’s integrated child-care facility will have up to 104 spaces for children aged zero to six and 30 school-aged spots for before- and after-school care.

The building’s special features include human ecology and applied technology labs, as well as a geothermal system.

The project is part of a bundle of four schools that are being built using a standard design.

Construction is expected to start on the three other projects, including two in Winnipeg — in Devonshire Park and Prairie Pointe — and one in southwest Brandon, in the coming months.

Province gives $4M for Interlake transitional housing complex

A future transitional housing complex for Indigenous women, children and LGBTTQ+ people received a $4-million funding boost from the provincial government Tuesday.

Ten studio-style apartments will be added to the project, which is being constructed in the Interlake. The Manitoba Métis Federation, which is partnering with the province on the initiative, announced the initial 10 beds last summer.

“I think it’s going to be a really… I hate to say this, a well-used (facility),” said federation spokesperson Anita Campbell. “I think that we’re going to have more women… than we can help.”

The expansion is set to be complete by early 2027, Campbell said, after a projected May grand opening for the first 10 beds.

Tenants will have their own living quarters and share community spaces including a kitchen, laundry, garden and healing areas.

Organizers are working with shelters and creating intake and security policies, Campbell said. There will be a one-year cap for tenants staying in Phase 2 beds, but they may be shifted to Phase 1 rooms — where a stay can last two years — if it’s needed and space is available.

Staff will help departing tenants plan their housing futures before they leave the complex, Campbell said.

Teen charged with repeatedly stealing from grocery stores

A man is accused of stealing meat and chocolate from two grocery stores in north Winnipeg eight times.

Winnipeg police say an 18-year-old shoplifted more than $5,000 worth of meat and chocolate during a string of incidents from Jan. 19 to Feb. 20.

All of the crimes were recorded by the retailers’ security cameras and were reported to police.

Seven of the robberies took place at a store on the 2500 block of Main Street; the eighth was at a store on the 500 block of Mountain Avenue.

The accused was arrested March 6 for robbery, five counts of theft under $5,000, mischief, failing to attend court and five counts of failure to comply with a release order.

He is charged with the eight additional counts of theft under $5,000 and one count of failing to comply with a release order.

He was detained in custody.

RCMP ask for help to find woman missing since 2016

Ten years after her disappearance, RCMP continue to search for a missing Sapotaweyak Cree Nation woman.

Lorlene Bone last spoke to her mother on Feb. 29, 2016. She was reported missing to Swan River RCMP on March 9, 2016.

Bone would be 41 years old today.

Police continue to ask anyone with information to reach out, noting no detail is too small.

“Numerous searches have taken place over the past 10 years and we’ve followed up on many tips, but we continue to look for the one piece of information that get us the answers we’re looking for, and find Lorlene,” RCMP Sgt. Marnie Carvelli said in a Tuesday news release.

Police asked anyone with information about Bone’s disappearance to call Swan River RCMP at 204-734-4686 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online.

Weston residence busted, six face drug, weapon charges

Six people face drug trafficking and weapon charges after police executed a warrant at a Weston neighbourhood residence Saturday.

Four men and three women were arrested at a residence on the 1400 block of Logan Avenue after a Winnipeg Police Service investigation began in February.

A long list of items were seized including 11 grams of cocaine, as well as gabapentin and Percocet pills, several replica air pistols, a collapsible baton, a machete, body armour and a 2015 Rockwood Woo travel trailer worth $20,000.

A 58-year-old man, 25-year-old man and 19-year-old woman face charges. They were released on undertakings.

David Richard Walsh, 61, Marcus Fredrick Jones, 46, and Christina Roberta Barto, 45, were charged and detained in custody.

Another woman was arrested but was not charged and released.

Church Avenue building fire extinguished

Firefighters doused flames in a building on Church Avenue early Tuesday morning.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were sent to the 1500 block of Church at 12:17 a.m. and were greeted with heavy smoke and flames coming from the commercial facility. Firefighters attacked the fire and had it under control shortly before 1 a.m.

No injuries were reported and no damage estimate was available.

Bahamas, Buena Vista Orchestra coming to Burt

Bahamas returns to the stage this fall with an extensive North American tour in support of My Second Last Album; the tour brings Toronto singer-songwriter born Afie Jurvanen and his band to the Burton Cummings Theatre on Friday, Sept. 25.

My Second Last Album was nominated for Best Adult Alternative Album of the Year at the 2026 Junos, marking the 1oth nomination for the indie artist.

The following month brings Buena Vista Orchestra — which features a revolving lineup of musicians from groups including the Buena Vista Social Club, AfroCuban All Stars, and the bands of Celia Cruz, Omara Portuondo, Chucho Valdés and Willie Colon to the Burt.

The ensemble will be led by Cuban violinist Rolando Morejón Reyes at the Oct. 25 concert.

Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday at Ticketmaster.ca; prices have not yet been announced.

Burt Block Party lineup announced

The annual outdoor concert series held in downtown Winnipeg outside the Burton Cummings Theatre has announced the bands for the four nights of the Aug. 13-17 event.

As usual, the series is grouped by genre: Thursday, Aug. 13, will see metalcore act Killswitch Engage perform; Friday, Aug. 14, features female indie-pop acts Beaches, Lights and Lolo; Saturday features Canadian classic acts Colin James and Streetheart; and Sunday it’s a ’90s flashback with Collective Soul, 54-40, and Paul Langlois of the Tragically Hip.

Opening acts for each night have yet to be announced. The site will again be licensed and include food trucks and vendors.

Tickets go on sale on Friday, March 13, at 10 a.m. and start at $69.50 per night (plus fees) for the first 1,000 tickets sold for each date. VIP tickets offer access to the VIP viewing deck, exclusive bar service and washrooms, two complimentary beverages, popcorn and a souvenir VIP laminate.  Regular and VIP full-festival (four days) and two-day passes, which offer savings over buying individual nights, are also available.

Man charged with child luring, related offences

A Winnipeg man in his 40s has been charged with online luring and offences related to child sexual abuse and exploitation videos.

The Winnipeg Police Service said the charges stemmed from separate investigations by the internet child exploitation and counter exploitation units, starting last July.

Officers first learned of videos that were uploaded to the internet between February and May 2025.

During a separate investigation in August, a man was arrested for communicating online with someone who was believed to be under 18.

Police said the man was charged with a child luring offence and communication for the purpose of obtaining sexual services.

He was released on a release order, which included conditions to not possess or access electronic storage devices.

The man was arrested and storage devices were seized March 5, when investigators searched a Wolseley home after identifying an internet subscriber linked to the uploaded videos.

Police said the suspect was charged with seven additional offences, including possessing, accessing and distributing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

He was also charged with failing to comply with release order conditions.

Police did not release the man’s name in order to protect the privacy of people involved in the case.

He is at least the fourth person to be charged with child luring and other offences by Winnipeg police this year.

Woman accused of refusing to pay for beauty services arrested

A woman who is accused of refusing to pay for more than $2,000 worth of beauty treatments at a boutique on Marion Street last month has been arrested.

Staff at the boutique called police on Feb. 18 after the client received her beauty services and said she would return to pay, but never did.

Winnipeg Police Service property crimes investigators identified a suspect and got an arrest warrant, before locating the 31-year-old suspect on Monday.

She was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and released ahead of a court date.
