Ontario’s police watchdog says an officer who fatally shot a man multiple times at Danforth Go Station in Toronto last year didn’t commit a criminal offence.
Toronto police said at the time officers responded to reports of a person with a gun in the area of Main Street and Stephenson Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. on Dec. 6
Police said a man armed with a firearm was shot and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries where he died.
The Special Investigation Unit says the 32-year-old man was shot after he drew his BB gun and swung it toward the officer during the interaction.
SIU’s director Joseph Martino says he was satisfied that the officers fired his gun in act of self-defence to protect himself from a “reasonably apprehended attack by the man.”
The SIU’s report said a total of seven shots were heard.
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
