SURREY – Two BC Highway Patrol officers were taken to hospital, including one with serious injuries, after crashing during a motorcycle training exercise in Surrey, B.C.

A statement from the RCMP says officers from various units were participating in a motorcycle escort re‑certification course Saturday morning when a BC Highway Patrol officer was rear‑ended by another officer from the same unit.

It says they were travelling south on 152 Street on fully marked RCMP police motorcycles.

Police say one officer was transported to hospital with serious injuries and remains in hospital.

The other officer was taken to hospital as well, then was released and returned to the training course.

Insp. Adam Tallboy, officer in charge of Vancouver Island BC Highway Patrol, says the focus is on ensuring the injured officer receives the best possible care.

“Policing, including training, carries inherent risks, and this incident is a reminder of the dangers officers face every day.,” Tallboy said in the police statement.

“We are also ensuring that all officers involved have access to the appropriate resources, including medical and peer support, as they recover from this incident.”
