INNISFAIL – A former Alberta correctional officer has been charged with breach of trust for an alleged affair with an inmate and smuggling contraband into the prison where she worked.
RCMP say it received a report from the Correctional Service Canada institution at Bowden in July of last year.
The officer immediately resigned after learning about the investigation.
Investigators allege the woman developed a romantic relationship with an inmate and she was smuggling contraband, including nicotine patches and a cellphone, into the institution for the inmate to sell.
Police say banking records suggest she received thousands of dollars in payment for her role in the smuggling.
Jennifer Plante, who is 46, from Olds, Alta., was arrested Wednesday and charged with breach of trust by a public official.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 16, 2026.
