HSC children’s emergency dept. flagged for measles exposure
5:28 PM
Manitoba Health is flagging two possible measles exposures at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg in recent days.
The first exposure took place last Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 3:50 p.m. at HSC’s children’s hospital emergency department, said a Monday measles update. The second took place in the same location on Saturday from 11:05 a.m. until 4:50 p.m.
People exposed who have not been vaccinated may be eligible for preventative treatment within six days.
As of April 11, there have been 474 confirmed cases of measles in the province and 68 probable cases, according to Manitoba Health.
Housing starts up 24 per cent in Winnipeg this year
1:37 PM
Hundreds more homes were built in Winnipeg at the start of this year than in 2025.
There were 1,216 housing starts in the city between January and March, a 24.3 per cent increase from the 978 built during the same period of 2025, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation data.
“We’ve made it a priority to cut red tape and speed up approvals, and these numbers show our plan is working,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in a news release. “We are making it easier for builders to get shovels in the ground, and that means more homes for Winnipeg families, more quickly.”
National housing starts rose 8.6 per cent during the same period.
The increase includes a large bump in so-called “missing middle” housing, which includes medium density housing types like duplexes, fourplexes and rowhouses, while apartment construction also increased.
Winnipeg saw 4,993 housing starts throughout 2025.
Man charged in break-and-enter spree
1:29 PM
City police have charged a 38-year-old man with a break-and-enter spree worth thousands, which includes thefts they say happened at government buildings and commercial businesses.
Major crimes started investigating in February 2026 and determined a single person was linked to all of the incidents, said Winnipeg police in a Monday release. In total, police say approximately $31,000 in goods and cash were stolen between Jan. 12 and Feb. 9.
Police also said there was an incident on April 9 where a man entered a business in the 100 block of Sherbrook Street and caused $5,000 worth of damages. All of the incidents were caught on video which was then turned over to police.
On April 9, police charged the man in connection to thefts at Milner Ridge Correctional Centre where he was incarcerated on unrelated charges.
He’s now facing charges that include five counts of break-and-enter and theft, mischief under $5,000 and possession of break-in tools. He remains in custody.
Pedestrian dead after being hit on Henderson
12:30 PM
A 32-year-old man is dead after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing Henderson Highway on foot Friday morning.
The pedestrian was crossing Henderson shortly before 5:20 a.m. when he was hit by a vehicle travelling northbound, a Winnipeg Police Service news release Monday stated.
Police were sent to the intersection of Henderson and Neil Avenue after the driver called 911. The driver spoke with officers at the scene.
The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died.
The traffic division is continuing the investigation.
Anyone with information or video from the time of the incident is asked to call officers at 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
Firefighters respond to fire on Bannatyne Avenue
9:14 AM
Three people were transported to hospital in stable condition on Monday morning as firefighters responded to a fire in a multi-family home on Bannatyne Avenue.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire on the street’s 400 block shortly after 2 a.m., where crews found smoke coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire and declared it under control at 2:45 a.m.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team responded to the scene to provide temporary support to displaced residents, according to a release.
The first is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available, the release said.
