Winnipeg police arrested an intoxicated man who showed up at the Grace Hospital, allegedly with a smoke grenade in his possession early Monday morning.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were called to the hospital on Booth Drive by security personnel, who found the device on the man when he walked into the facility at about 5:30 a.m.

Bomb unit investigators took over and checked out the device, an active military-grade smoke-screen training grenade. The grenade, when triggered, blows out smoke, but does not explode.

Police aren’t sure how he managed to get such a smoke grenade, which is used by the Canadian military but isn’t available to the general public.

A 45-year-old man has been charged with several weapons offences. He was held in custody.
