The Louis Riel School Division will rename a French immersion school in honour of the late justice Murray Sinclair.
École Sage Creek Bonavista will soon be called École Mazina-Giizhik, named for Sinclair’s spirit name, which means: “The one who speaks of pictures in the sky,” in Anishinaabemowin, said a news release issued by the school division.
Sinclair, who died at 73 in November 2024, was a judge, senator and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
Public consultations garnered “strong and resounding” support for naming the school after Sinclair, the division said.
An official naming ceremony for the school is set for May 6.
