TORONTO –
Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:
Spring economic update
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne will release the Liberal government’s spring economic update on Tuesday. The report comes after the Liberals earned a majority through a series of byelection wins and floor crossings. Prime Minister Mark Carney has made some notable promises about building big and building fast.
Rate announcement
The Bank of Canada will release its latest interest rate decision and monetary policy report on Wednesday. The central bank is widely expected by economists to leave its policy interest rate unchanged at 2.25 per cent.
Railway earnings
Canadian National Railway Co. will release its first-quarter results before markets open on Wednesday, followed by Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. which is expected to report its results after the markets close later that same day. The reports come as the war in the Middle East drives energy prices higher and raises concerns about the global economy.
GDP report
Statistics Canada will release Thursday morning its reading for gross domestic product for February as well as its preliminary estimate for March and the first quarter as a whole. The agency’s preliminary estimate for February suggested real GDP rose 0.2 per cent for the month, boosted by gains in manufacturing, the mining, quarrying and support services subsector and in finance and insurance, partially offset by weakness in agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting.
Air Canada results
Air Canada will hold a conference call with investors and financial analysts to discuss its first-quarter results on Thursday. The airline recently announced it would suspend a half-dozen routes, citing fuel costs that render them unprofitable. Air Canada also increased baggage fees for the first checked bag in its basic economy class on domestic, U.S. and sun destination flights.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 26, 2026.
