Moose facing elimination after dropping Game 3

The Manitoba Moose are heading into familiar territory, though the stakes are even higher this time around.

By dropping a 4-2 decision to the Grand Rapids Griffins before a crowd of 7,581 at Van Andel Arena on Wednesday, the Moose have been pushed to the brink of elimination for the third time in the Calder Cup playoffs.

The good news for the Moose is that they’ve already survived two previous scares, though this latest challenge comes against the top team in the Western Conference standings after they took a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-five Central Division semifinal.

Game 4 is set for Friday, with the series finale scheduled for Saturday if the Moose can find a way to extend the American Hockey League season.

Mason Shaw and Sam Fagemo scored for the Moose, who got 28 saves from Domenic DiVincentiis.

Three taken to hospital after Wednesday morning crash

Three people were taken to hospital after an accident at the intersection of Inkster Boulevard and Arlington Street Wednesday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service responded to a “serious” motor vehicle collision involving multiple vehicles, spokesman Stephen Spencer said in an email.

A damaged car, transport van and truck were at the scene. The truck appeared to be in the front yard of a home on Arlington Street.

The three people taken to hospital have since been upgraded to stable condition. The incident is being investigated by the traffic division.

Two arrested after gun flashed at Morris hospital

Police say a gun was flashed during an argument Tuesday inside Morris General Hospital.

Mounties were called to the southern Manitoba hospital at about 4:30 p.m. and learned two women were arguing when a man flashed a handgun at one of them, an RCMP news release Wednesday said.

Shortly after the suspects, a man and a woman, left the hospital, RCMP got a call about a pickup truck hitting a sign on Highway 75, north of Morris. The truck was abandoned and two people were seen fleeing.

Officers from the St. Pierre-Jolys detachment and police dogs eventually located the couple on Main Street in Morris. Police dog Sega found a replica handgun nearby, RCMP said.

A 20-year-old Plum Coulee man was charged with numerous offences, including assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and failure to comply. He was remanded in custody.

A 39-year-old Emerson woman faces charges of possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and causing a disturbance. She is expected to be released on an undertaking.

Cannabis store employee sexually assaulted during robbery

City police have a suspect in custody after a man locked himself inside a cannabis store in the West Alexander neighbourhood Tuesday night and sexually assaulted an employee before robbing the business.

The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m., when a man entered the store, located on the 100 block of Isabel Street. The man waited for another customer to leave, and then locked the door behind them — isolating the lone female employee, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Wednesday.

Investigators learned the suspect then went behind the counter and sexually assaulted the 24-year-old woman. She pushed the man away and fled before contacting police. The victim was not injured, the release said.

The man left on foot with an unknown quantity of cannabis products before police arrived. Officers located the suspect on the 800 block of Main Street shortly before 1 a.m., placing him under arrest without incident, WPS said.

A 33-year-old man is charged with sexual assault, forcible confinement and theft under $5,000. He was also wanted on a warrant for failing to comply with a probation order.

He was released on an undertaking.

Truck overturns on Trans-Canada Highway

An overturned truck shut down a section of the Trans-Canada Highway west of Brandon Wednesday morning.

Mounties from the Virden detachment responded to a report of a crash on Highway 1 at Road 134 West, between Griswold and Oak Lake, around 8:10 a.m., the Manitoba RCMP said in a news release.

Officers learned a large box truck lost control and tipped onto its side, blocking both lanes of westbound traffic. Police advised motorists to expect significant delays and seek alternate routes, as crews worked to clear the highway. The highway reopened shortly after noon.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries, police said.

Guns, drugs, cash seized after shots fired in St. Matthews

Three teenagers are facing charges after reports of gunfire in the St. Matthews neighbourhood led police to uncover a cache of guns, drugs and cash believed to be connected to a trafficking operation.

Officers responded to the 200 block of Simcoe Street just before 1 a.m. on April 24, where an unidentified suspect had fired several bullets into a home. Nobody inside the residence was injured, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.

Investigators secured a search warrant for the property and seized an array of weapons, including a loaded MP40 submachine gun, two hunting rifles, two handguns, one shotgun a machete and 3D-printed brass knuckles. Officers also found about $1,300 worth of cocaine and crack, $9,700 in cash, five cellphones and other drug packaging paraphernalia, WPS said.

Police arrested two teens, ages 16 and 17 years old, who were inside the home at the time. Investigators also issued an arrest warrant for a third suspect, 19, who turned himself in at police headquarters Tuesday.

Cyclist struck, injured in South Transcona

A cyclist is recovering in hospital after a crash with a pickup truck in South Transcona early Wednesday morning.

First responders were called to the area of Dugald Road, near Murdock Road, around 5:30 a.m., a Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson said.

One person, a cyclist, was transported to hospital in critical condition, but later upgraded to stable, WPS said.

Police were expected to remain on scene throughout the morning. By 9 a.m., the eastbound lanes of Dugald remained closed, and officers were diverting traffic to alternate routes.

Investigators were spotted taking photos of the scene, while other police deployed a drone to capture an aerial view. A black pickup truck was parked on the shoulder of the road, near what appeared to be a bent bicycle laying in the ditch.

Police asked motorists to avoid the area, if possible.
